Western Demons Presidents Report 2017

Welcome to the Western Demons supporter group 2017 AGM and my report of our activities during the year.

After a much improved 2016, long suffering supporters looked forward to the 2017 season with great anticipation. The team continued to show improvement with 12 wins and being more competitive throughout the year. Consistency and playing for four quarters continues to be a problem. We managed to beat 4 sides in the eight, Adelaide, Port Adelaide, Essendon and West Coast at Domain Stadium. ( Who could forget that ) Then lost to Fremantle by 2 points at the MCG after leading by 36 points, Hawthorn by 3 points, Collingwood by 16 points after giving them a 6 goals to 1 start in the first quarter, which in the end cost us a place in the finals. North Melbourne beating us twice to extend the losing streak to 17 continues to be a problem. On a brighter note we beat the reigning Premiers by 57 points. With the teams continued development, we look forward to 2018. There can be no excuses!!!

Thanks to the efforts of the Committee and our loyal Western Demons supporters we continued our support of MFC in 2017. We again supported player Dean Kent, donated to the past players association and the MFC women’s team. Our donation to the Club through the pledge per win program in 2017 was $2700.00. Fund raising is becoming more difficult each year and we welcome new ideas from our members.

The game day functions at the Paddo continued to improve with numbers increasing again. It is a great venue to meet and socialise with fellow supporters. Thanks to Neil and Jon Randall and their staff for their continued support. Hopefully we will see more members there in 2018 as the team continues to improve and climb the ladder.

3 Dee Radio continued in 2017 under its new name Dee Team Radio thanks to the generous support of the Paddo, The Western Demons and an anonymous sponsor. Thanks to our on air presenters Iain Fisher, Ian Mills, Troy Sumpton and Roger Wingate for their efforts. The show had many interesting guests and kept us up to date with the latest news from the MFC and the Western Demons.

Our game in Perth this year was against the Eagles in June. And what a game it was, with a Tom McDonald successful snapshot in the dying seconds we finally beat the Eagles in Perth for the first time since 2002. The Pre-match function was again held at the Paddo with the evergreen Robbo as MC. With guest speakers Matthew Egan, player development Manager at MFC and PFC Coach and past MFC player Earl Spalding. Attended by 100 supporters it was a most enjoyable and financially successful day. The continuous singing of the team song on the bus going back to the Paddo and later in the restaurant was amazing. Looking forward to next year’s celebrations after beating the Eagles at Optus Stadium.

The Footy tipping competition was very popular and a great success again in 2017 with an increase in participants (76) and a very close fought contest for the winners.

Thanks to Neil Randall for being our Patron for 2017 after the sad passing of our former Patron MFC Legend Trevor Johnson.

Special thanks to Joan and the Western Demons Committee for their tireless efforts and enthusiastic support again in 2017.

The continued improvement by the team over recent seasons indicates that 2018 will be the year that us long suffering true blue supporters can look forward to with great excitement. GO DEES
